De naam betekent 'onder de bergen', wat slaat op de uitlopers van de Pyreneeën in de provincie Huesca, in het noorden van Aragón, op nauwelijks 50 km van de Franse grens. De D.O. Costers del Segre en de D.O. Navarra liggen beide op ongeveer dezelfde afstand, in respectievelijk het oosten en het westen. Toch heeft Somontano niets gemeen met die wijngebieden. De hoogte, het klimaat, de bodem en de oorspronkelijk druiven dragen alle bij tot het unieke van dit gebied.
